The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut is the oldest public art museum in the United States, founded in 1842. Its collection of more than 50,000 objects spans 5,000 years of art history, including significant holdings in Baroque paintings, Hudson River School landscapes, American decorative arts, and European Impressionism. The museum's Gothic Revival building is itself a landmark of American architectural history.
