The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. is the only museum in the country dedicated to portraiture as an art form and as a record of the people who have shaped American history. Its collection of more than 23,000 works includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings of notable Americans from the nation's founding to the present. The gallery shares a magnificent 1836 Greek Revival building with the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
