About
The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas is one of the world's most celebrated private art museums, founded by John and Dominique de Menil and opened in 1987. Free and open to the public, its collection of approximately 17,000 objects focuses on ancient, Byzantine, tribal, and modern and contemporary art, with exceptional depth in Surrealism and works by Picasso, Max Ernst, René Magritte, and Cy Twombly. The Rothko Chapel, an interfaith sanctuary housing 14 monumental paintings by Mark Rothko, stands adjacent to the museum.
